Ilitaqsiniq Wins the 2022 Arctic Inspiration Prize
On February 8, 2023, Ilitaqsiniq was honoured with the largest annual prize in Canada: the $1-million Arctic Inspiration Prize. This award celebrates and provides seed-funding to Northern teams with innovative project ideas.
The prize was awarded at the annual Northern Lights Conference in Ottawa for our Pilimmaksaijuliriniq Project. Pilimmaksaijuliriniq was developed in response to the National Inuit Suicide Prevention Strategy and other northern mental wellness action plans to build additional mental health support capacities across Inuit Nunangat. The project is just one of many initiatives Ilitaqsiniq uses to empower Inuit to be capable and confident.
“Our staff, all from Nunavut, are passionate and motivated individuals who deliver Ilitaqsiniq’s suite of programs with agility and compassion,” said Ilitaqsiniq Executive Director Adriana Kusugak in her award acceptance speech. “They all work tirelessly to go above and beyond in service to empower Inuit. This team, the Ilitaqsiniq family, that dedicates so much of their lives to supporting others in finding their voice, building their confidence, connecting to their culture, learning their language, and always leading with Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is amazing.”
Ilitaqsiniq was nominated by Commissioner of Nunavut Eva Arreak who, along with its partners, funders and supporters, has truly supported Ilitaqsiniq and its team for years.
The Arctic Inspiration Prize is created “by the North and for the North.” It is a community of people and groups, including Indigenous organizations, academia, governments, non-governmental organizations, industry, philanthropy, media and arts and culture organizations, who share a common goal: to recognize northern innovation and excellence and encourage teamwork for the betterment of life in Canada’s North.
Ilitaqsiniq’s powerful belief in Inuit resiliency and resourcefulness is what inspires us to continuously work towards rejuvenating our culture and traditions. With this generous financial award, we are excited to bring a new project across Inuit Nunangat and the three regions of Nunavut.
Ilitaqsiniq recognizes the other 2023 winners and nominees. We are proud to be considered alongside such inspiring peers.
