Empowering Northern Youth Career Development in Our Communities
Finding a job and building a career is a big step for some youth, especially in the North. Figuring out their interests, what jobs are available and what skills are required doesn’t have to be a solo journey. That’s where the YESS program comes in. Through meaningful classroom sessions and hands-on work experience, we’re helping youth in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon build their future.
YESS is built on a flexible community-driven approach. Over the course of six weeks, groups of six to eight participants, aged 15 to 30, learn and gain work experience. Their time is split between classroom and on-the-job learning, giving them a fuller picture of the types of work and workplace responsibilities in their community.
We provide an overall course framework, allowing you to tailor it to the culture and needs of your region. YESS provides opportunities to include local guest speakers and relevant training and certifications, such as written driver’s tests, WHMIS training, First Aid and CPR, and workplace diversity training. It also provides suggestions for cultural activities and wellness supports, setting youth up for long-term work-life balance.
At the end of the program participants emerge ready to take the next step in their journey. “I learned I am more confident and capable than I thought,” reflects one participant.

YESS Leads to Employability
The YESS program was designed specifically for unemployed, underemployed and out-of-school youth who want to re-engage or take steps towards education and employment. The impact of the program is felt by the participants and their community.
Some YESS successes include:
- Participants are hired directly into a position following their job placement,
- Participants returning to school with a clearer vision and commitment to their career path, and
- Empowered youth, equipped with the skills for long-term employability.
The real benefits of the program run deeper than employment. At the end of the program, each participant emerges with a stronger sense of self and a clearer path towards meaningful work.
“I learned that I have all the motivation to learn new things and I just have to be in a good environment for that,” says one participant.
